Job Summary and Qualifications
Performs a variety of standardized laboratory tests on biological specimens, including advanced and specialized techniques in compliance with all of the regulations of the Laboratory’s accrediting agencies. This position utilizes safe and standard techniques while working as a critical member of the Laboratory team and exhibiting superior customer service.
What you will do in this role:
- Assists in data collection for statistical surveys or other reports generated by the Department.
- Participates in quality control and performance improvement activities within the Department.
- Maintains high degree of competency in the operation of all equipment in the performance of clinical laboratory testing to include trouble-shooting and minor repair.
- Facilitates communication between the Laboratory and members of the Medical Staff and other Hospital Departments to enhance patient care services.
- Coordinates clinical laboratory service scheduling with applicable Hospital Departments and Medical Staff for maximum utilization of resources and maintenance of quality care.
- Remains after shift hours at the request of supervisor to complete work.
- Is available to cover shifts outside of regular schedule upon request.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratory.
- Assists in review of I-Stat and Accurate Beside Glucose results for accuracy.
- Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the provision of diagnostic services.
- Applies general knowledge of procedures in Hematology, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Serology, Coagulation, and Microbiology. Can perform high complexity testing.
- Applies general knowledge of instrumentation in all areas of the Laboratory and Patient Care areas using the I-Stat .
- Applies general knowledge of quality control in all areas of the Laboratory and point of care testing.
- Collects specimens as needed utilizing appropriate precautions to promote patient comfort and minimize potential for exposure.
- Processes routine test results to include analysis, calculations, and reporting of results.
- Has performed proficiency testing in all disciplines and has received a passing score from the College of American Pathologist.
- Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the maintenance of instrumentation with a focus on maintenance of all quality controls.
- Performs preventive maintenance of instrumentation.
- Ensures reliability of results by proper use of quality controls with recalibration and corrective actions taken when needed.
- Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies for assigned area of responsibility.
- Validates new methods, procedures and instruments.
- Performs troubleshooting as required with reporting of major problems with instrumentation for repair.
- Maintains complete documentation of all instruments and problems
- Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the recording and reporting of testing results.
- Monitor results of quality controls and patient testing for I-Stat and Bedside Glucose testing.
- Notifies physicians and other members of the health care team of results in a timely manner with reporting of critical values per standard operating procedure.
- Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in performing general duties.
- Performs procedures utilizing Universal Precautions to minimize the potential for exposure to infectious processes.
What qualifications you will need:
- Associate Degree must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- (MT-AAB) Medical Technologist, or (CLT/CLS) Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist, or (MLS) Medical Laboratory Scientist
